More Than 100 NGC-certified French and English Coins Featured in September Sale

Posted on 9/3/2021

A large selection of rarities from France and England that span centuries of history are being offered in a Spink UK auction.

More than one hundred coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) are being offered in The Uvedale Collection of English and French Gold Coins sale by London-based Spink UK. The collection includes 153 English and French gold coins spanning years of history from Medieval Europe through the French Revolution to the dawn of World War II. Online bidding has already begun for the sale, which takes place on September 22, 2021.

Leading the sale is an England 1688 James II 5 Guineas graded NGC XF 45 (lot 6718) with an estimate of £8,000 to £12,000 (about $11,000 to $16,500 USD). Online bidding has already begun for this 5 Guineas, minted during the reign of King James II, reaching £6,500 (about $9,000 USD) almost three weeks before the sale.

The 1688 James II 5 Guineas features a left-facing bust of the king. His head is encircled by the inscription IACOBVS II DEI GRATIA ("James II by the grace of God"), while the reverse shows four crowned shields bearing the arms of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, with the inscription MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX ("Of Great Britain, France and Ireland King"). The edge of the coin is milled diagonally. Because King James II ruled for only four years — from 1685 to 1688 — guineas honoring him are rare. Only 21 1688 5 Guineas of any variety have been graded by NGC.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale include:
