Posted on 8/3/2021
Brazilian coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) realized over $100,000 in a sale presented by Heritage Auctions on August 1, 2021. The sale featured nearly 200 NGC-certified Brazilian coins from the early 1700s to the late 1800s.
A Brazil 1813M 640 Reis graded NGC AU 53 (lot 99092) was struck during the reign of the Prince Regent John VI, who later became King of Portugal from 1816 to 1826 and King of Brazil from 1816 to 1822. Because his mother, Maria I (1734-1816), suffered from mental illness, John VI ruled in her place. This rare coin realized $6,600 — above its pre-auction estimate of $2,000 to $4,000.
