NGC Registry Featured Set: American Gold Eagle One-Tenth Ounce Proof Set

Posted on 8/10/2021

This month’s featured set belongs to Ferdinand Erdman.

Last month, we featured an NGC Registry set that celebrated an emblematic national symbol of Canada — the Maple Leaf. This month, we return home to celebrate our own glorious national icon, the American Eagle, as presented in Ferdinand Erdman’s 1/10 Ounce Gold Eagles, 1988-Date, Proof set.

For the first time since 1986, in 2021, the US Mint presented us with new designs for the ever-popular American Eagle coin series, and they are well-received and treasured by collectors all around the world. With the August release of the designer two-coin one-tenth ounce gold set, we are reminded of the superb beauty, grace and distinction of one of the most celebrated and popular coin series in US history.

The NGC Registry boasts over 3,100 Gold Eagle set participants and over 300 participants in the 1/10 oz proof sets alone; it is a challenge to stand out from the crowd, to be sure. Ferdinand Erdman does just that. He began compiling his 1/10 oz set just in 2020 and has climbed the ranks to an admirable 6th place in a short time.

Erdman has images and comments for almost all his coins which provides a great visual of this series dating over 30 years back to 1988. What really makes him stand out from the crowd is a short but personal story related to his family. This collector pays a touching tribute to his heritage with this “Schultze Family Heritage Set.”

“In our family history lore, my grandfather Schultze always carried in his pocket a thousand dollars worth of gold. He was a businessman who struggled to keep his family taken care with a skill that was being replaced by the automobile. He moved from town to town trying to make a living through two World Wars and a great depression…”

Thank you for sharing your personal story, Ferdinand. Collectors like you are an integral and valued part of the NGC collecting community. We look forward to your future set upgrades and personal anecdotes!

Get your sets ready for the 2021 NGC Registry Awards. The NGC Registry is a free online platform where collectors register and display their certified coins and can compete against other collectors around the world for recognition and prizes. This popular resource now boasts over 24,000 users, 217,000+ registered sets and over 1.3 million registered coins. In January of 2021, the NGC Registry awarded more than $25,000 in prizes.

Would you like your set to be chosen for a future article? 100% completion in a set is not always feasible. Perhaps, we will choose someone whose set has a personal story behind it or some interesting historical facts. We are looking for those sets where someone has taken the time to make the set unique and a reflection of his/her personal collecting style. It may be your set! Stay tuned.
