Incredibly Rare NGC-certified Austrian Coin Crossing the Auction Block

Posted on 8/3/2021

The Austria 5 Ducats tops the list of NGC-graded world rarities offered in a two-part Stack’s Bowers auction.

A historic Austrian coin certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) is the top lot in Session B of the Stack’s Bowers American Numismatic Association Auction of World Coins. The Austria 1513 Salzburg 5 Ducats graded NGC AU 50 (lot 40032) is the only known example of Friedberg# 576B. It has an estimate $100,000 to $120,000.

On the coin's obverse is a bust of Leonhard von Keutschach (c. 1442-8 June 1519), who was Archbishop of Salzburg from 1495 until his death. He is depicted wearing a jeweled collar and tunic, surrounded by the legend "ORA PRO ME SANCTE RUDBERTE" ("Pray for Me, O Saint Rupert"). On the reverse is a quartered shield displaying the arms of Salzburg (the standing lions) combined with those of the Archbishop (two turnips, which were symbols of wealth and high status).

Online bidding is underway for Sessions B and C, with live auctions taking place August 18 and August 20, 2021, respectively. An important collection of Scottish rarities — the Loch Ness Collection of Scottish Coins — will be featured in Session C.
