Historic Sales of Rarities from the NGC-certified Partrick Collection End on June 27

Posted on 6/17/2021

A fascinating NGC-certified St. Patrick Halfpenny is among the last chances to acquire a coin from this unparalleled collection.

Heritage Auctions concludes its extraordinary year-long series of sales from the Donald G. Partrick Collection with a Showcase of Additional Colonial Selections. Included in this final sale are a number of rarities certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) such as a St. Patrick Halfpenny, numerous vintage tokens and medals, and coins from the French Colonies. Online bidding is now open and ends on June 27, 2021.

In the spotlight is a circa 1670 St. Patrick Halfpenny graded NGC VG 8 BN (lot 45001). One side shows King David playing a harp while the other features St. Patrick preaching to a crowd. These coins typically include a brass area on the crown that was meant to deter counterfeiters.

These copper St. Patrick coins are believed to have been brought to North America via Mark Newby, a Quaker who emigrated from Ireland to western New Jersey. In May 1682, he was instrumental in having these coppers made legal tender in the region, where they were used by colonists.

The NGC-certified Partrick Collection is one of the greatest collections of Colonial and Early American coins, tokens and medals ever assembled. Coins in a series of sales by Heritage Auctions since 2014 have realized more than $73 million. The centerpiece of the Partrick Collection is an NGC-certified 1787 New York Style Brasher Doubloon that realized $9.36 million in a January 2021 sale, setting numerous records, including most expensive coin ever sold at a Heritage auction.

Other important NGC-certified rarities offered during this last Partrick Collection sale include:
