Three Swiss Gold Rarities Certified by NGC Take Top Spots in SINCONA Sales

A Zurich 5 Ducat gold coin soared to more than double its pre-auction estimate.

Rarities from Switzerland and elsewhere graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) brought in premium prices at auctions presented by Swiss International Coin Auction (SINCONA) on May 17-19, 2021.

A Switzerland 1720 Zurich 5 Ducat graded NGC MS 62 (Auction 70, lot 3669) realized a staggering price of 186,000 CHF (about $207,000 USD) — more than double its starting price. The coin features a detailed cityscape of Zurich on the obverse, while the reverse depicts Zurich’s coat of arms with a fierce lion brandishing a sword. The coin was listed in the sale at a starting price of 80,000 CHF (about $87,400 USD).

Also bringing a premium price was a Switzerland 1741 Basel 6 Ducat graded NGC MS 63 PL (Auction 70, lot 3096), which realized 114,000 CHF (about $127,000 USD). The coin features the city of Basel framed by eight coats of arms. The reverse depicts a basilisk with the Basel coat of arms. The coin’s starting price was 80,000 CHF (about $87,400 USD).

Another coin, a Switzerland 1617 Haldenstein 7 Ducat graded NGC MS 63 (Auction 70, lot 3389), realized 114,000 CHF (about $127,000 USD). The obverse bears the image and the name of Thomas von Schauenstein Ehrenfels, who commissioned the coin almost a decade after inheriting Haldenstein. This high-grade coin had a starting price of 80,000 CHF (about $87,400 USD).

  • a Switzerland 1741 Lucerne 5 Ducat graded NGC MS 64 (Auction 70, lot 3417) that realized 102,000 CHF (about $113,000 USD)
  • a Great Britain 1826 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 61 Cameo (Auction 69, lot 558) that realized 96,000 CHF (about $107,000 USD)
  • a Switzerland 1796 Bern 4 Ducat graded NGC MS 64 PL (Auction 70 lot 3213) that realized 42,000 CHF (about $47,000 USD)
  • a Switzerland 1798 Bern 4 Ducat graded NGC MS 63 (Auction 70 lot 3224) that realized 38,400 CHF (about $43,000 USD)
  • a Switzerland 1794 B Lucerne 24 Munzgulden graded NGC MS 62 (Auction 70 lot 3427) that realized 38,400 CHF (about $43,000 USD)
  • a Switzerland 1767 Chur Ducat graded NGC MS 62 (Auction 70 lot 3392) that realized 36,000 CHF (about $40,000 USD)
  • a Switzerland 1771 Geneva 3 Pistoles graded NGC MS 66 (Auction 70 lot 3322) that realized 33,600 (about $37,000 USD)
  • a Switzerland 1796 M Lucerne 24 Munzgulden graded NGC MS 64+ (Auction 70 lot 3431) that realized 30,000 CHF (about $33,200 USD)
  • a Switzerland 1813 Graubunden 16 Franken graded NGC MS 65 (Auction 70 lot 3399) that realized 28,800 CHF (about $32,000 USD)
