Rare NGC-certified Irish Gold Coin Featured in Heritage Auctions Sale

Posted on 5/3/2021

The May sale includes a selection of NGC-graded vintage and ancient coins, including a Queen Victoria Proof Set.

A variety of rare coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) are being offered in the upcoming World and Ancient Coins Platinum Night Auction, presented by Heritage Auctions. Online bidding is currently underway, with the sale concluding May 6-7, 2021.

An ultra-rare Ireland (1646) Gold Ormonde Pistole graded NGC XF 45 and pedigreed to the Kroisis Collection (lot 31161) is one of the most anticipated coins in the sale. Struck during the turbulent Wars of the Three Kingdoms, James Butler, Duke of Ormonde, commissioned these coins because he did not have enough silver to pay the royalist garrison in Dublin. One of only 12 known examples, most of which reside in museums, this rarity has an estimate of $100,000 to $125,000.

Another highlight in the sale is an NGC-certified Great Britain 1887 11-piece Jubilee Proof set pedigreed to the Murdoch Collection (lot 31139). Known as Jubilee coinage, these coins were commissioned with a new portrait to celebrate Queen Victoria’s 50-year reign.
