Posted on 5/3/2021
A variety of rare coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) are being offered in the upcoming World and Ancient Coins Platinum Night Auction, presented by Heritage Auctions. Online bidding is currently underway, with the sale concluding May 6-7, 2021.
An ultra-rare Ireland (1646) Gold Ormonde Pistole graded NGC XF 45 and pedigreed to the Kroisis Collection (lot 31161) is one of the most anticipated coins in the sale. Struck during the turbulent Wars of the Three Kingdoms, James Butler, Duke of Ormonde, commissioned these coins because he did not have enough silver to pay the royalist garrison in Dublin. One of only 12 known examples, most of which reside in museums, this rarity has an estimate of $100,000 to $125,000.
