NGC-certified Rare Canadian Tokens Offered in March Heritage Sale

Posted on 2/23/2021

The Heritage Auctions sale features extraordinary selections from the Donald G. Partrick Collection.

A diverse selection of rare Canadian tokens certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) highlights the latest in a series of sales presented by Heritage Auctions featuring the unparalleled Donald G. Partrick Collection. Bidding is already underway online for the Canadian tokens sale, which will take place on March 21, 2021.

A Canada 1794 Gilt Copper Half Penny Token graded NGC Proof Details is among the rarities in the spotlight at the auction. These Half Penny tokens were struck in England as part of coinage proposed by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe for Upper Canada. The British colony was established north of the Great Lakes in 1791 and lasted until 1841, when it was united with Lower Canada to form the Province of Canada.

According to Heritage, this gilt example (Lot #97301) is believed to be unique for the coins, which were ultimately not approved for circulation. The Partrick Collection also boasts a copper example, which is featured in this sale as well (Lot #97300).

A Canada (1828) Copper “Montreal Ropery” Token graded NGC AU Details (Lot #97144) is another highlight of the sale. These tokens were issued prior to R.W. Owen selling Montreal Ropery about one year after operations began. Of the few known surviving tokens, most are believed to be in museums or closely guarded private collections, making this a scarce opportunity.

An 1820 Northwest Company Copper Token graded NGC AU 58 BN is one of many issued by the Montreal-based business. It operated dozens of trading posts and specialized in harvesting fur, which is reflected in the beaver design on the reverse of the token. This particular example (Lot #97064) is among the highest-graded of the Northwest Company tokens.

Another copper rarity in the auction is a Canada 1816 Nova Scotia Half Penny Token graded NGC XF 45 BN (Lot #97079). Seldom seen today, these tokens were struck for trade in Halifax, Nova Scotia, an important British colony 100 miles east of Maine that played a key role in the War of 1812.

The sale also includes a France 1725(COW) Louis d’or graded NGC MS 65 (Lot #97027). This high-grade example dates from early in the reign of King Louis XV, and shows a boyish bust of the king, who was a teenager at the time. Near the end of his 58-year reign, he was forced to cede control of Canada to Great Britain. The sale includes dozens of other numismatics treasures connected with Louis XV.
