In October of 1969, Congress passed a bill to create the dollar in honor of President Eisenhower and the Apollo XI space flight of 1969. It authorized the coining of two versions: a circulating copper-nickel clad coin and up to 150 million silver-clad coins for collectors.
Designed by the US Mint Chief Engraver, Frank Gasparro, the obverse features a bold left-facing profile of the president with Gasparro’s initials, FG, on the trim. The reverse depicts a striking adaptation of the official Apollo XI insignia.
When the US Mint initially released the clad circulation strikes — the largest clad coin ever issued — collectors hoarded them in a frenzy. Unfortunately, the general public scarcely used them due to their large size and weight. In 1973, the Mint decided to only strike enough for the Uncirculated Silver Dollar Sets.
The NGC Eisenhower Dollar 50th Anniversary Special Label (#1547) will be available for bulk submissions only for no additional fee through December 31, 2021.
For submissions, contact Scott Heller at Sheller@NGCcoin.com or 941-360-3990 or Miles Standish at Miles@NGCcoin.com or 949-922-0515.
