Two NGC-Certified English Gold Rarities Each Realize Over $200,000

The British coins were the top two lots in the Morton and Eden sale.

Vintage British coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) excelled in Morton and Eden’s Auction 109 sale, with two rarities realizing over $200,000 USD apiece. The auction took place in London from November 4-5, 2020.

A phenomenal England 1701 Gold 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 63 soared past its pre-sale estimate of £40,000 to £50,000 (about $52,000 to $65,000 USD), realizing £156,000, (about $205,000 USD). In 1701, Master of the Royal Mint Sir Isaac Newton, modernized the coin’s design as part of his revitalization of the institution. The 5 Guineas was the largest and most valuable of the gold coins issued during King William III’s reign and was only available to the most affluent.

Meanwhile, a Great Britain 1839 "Una and the Lion" 5 Pounds graded NGC Proof Details also realized £156,000 (about $205,000 USD). The famed Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, William Wyon, designed the coin to celebrate Queen Victoria’s coronation in 1837 and features her on both the obverse and reverse. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful British coins ever struck, and competition has been fierce for examples in recent auctions.
