World coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) are being featured in Morton and Eden’s upcoming Auction 109 sale that is set to take place at Sotheby’s London from November 4-5, 2020. Online bidding is now open.
A rare England 1701 Gold 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 63 is the centerpiece of the auction, with an estimate of £40,000 to £50,000 (about $52,000 to $65,000 USD). The 18th century gold coin features the bust of William III, King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1689 to 1702.
In 1701, the Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, Sir Isaac Newton modernized the coin’s design and produced it in limited quantities. The 5 Guineas was the largest and most valuable gold coin issued at the time and only obtainable by the most distinguished in society.
