Posted on 10/30/2020
A phenomenal Great Britain Five Sovereign certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) is the centerpiece of an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale being held November 5-6, 2020. Online bidding is now open.
The Great Britain 1826 Five Sovereign graded NGC PF 66 Ultra Cameo has an estimate of $250,000 to $500,000, far and away the highest in the sale. One of only 150 minted, this example is the second-finest in the NGC Census.

The famed Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, William Wyon, designed the exemplary piece’s obverse as part of King George IV’s mid-reign 1826 Proof Set. Wyon enhanced Jean-Baptiste Merlen’s original design, rendering a more idealistic depiction of the king’s visage. With its gleaming surfaces and stunning design, it is regarded as one of the most desirable vintage British coins on the market today.
“We are honored to have certified this great rarity of British numismatics,” said Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman and Grading Finalizer. “Even in lower grades, this coin has achieved impressive six-figure results. I wouldn’t be surprised if the NGC PF 66 Ultra Cameo example surpasses its estimate.”
“NGC certification helps British coin collectors bid on pieces of this caliber with greater confidence,” said Jim Halperin, Co-Chairman of Heritage Auctions. “We know our bidders trust NGC’s expertise.”
