NGC-certified US Coin Expected to Top Swiss Sale
Posted on 10/2/2020
High-grade coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) are among the most anticipated pieces in the SINCONA (Swiss International Coin Auction AG) Auction 66 sale being held in Zurich, Switzerland from October 19-20, 2020. Online bidding is now open.
The Coins and Medals sale on October 20 is offering a rare NGC-certified US 1864 $5 graded NGC PF 64 Ultra Cameo. This gold coin, commonly referred to as a half eagle, has a starting price of 75,000 CHF (about $82,000 USD), the highest of any coin in the auction.
By the end of the Civil War, the only operating mints were in Philadelphia and San Francisco, producing a scarce amount of government-issued coinage. The 1864 $5 gold issue is one of the lowest minted from 1862 to 1872. This especially rare Civil War Liberty Head Half Eagle is one of only 50 struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1864 in the Proof format.
