NGC Helps Collectors and Dealers Identify Counterfeit Coins with New German-Language Resource

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) has published a German-language version of its popular Counterfeit Detection resource to help more collectors and dealers identify counterfeit and altered coins. Illustrated with high-resolution images, the free resource is available at NGCcoin.de/counterfeit.

The NGC Counterfeit Detection portal is maintained by NGC’s expert grading team under the direction of NGC President and Grading Finalizer Rick Montgomery, one of the world’s foremost coin authenticators. It boasts a wealth of information, including:

• a survey of the types of counterfeit coins (such as cast, spark erosion, electrotype and transfer die counterfeits) as well as altered dates and altered mintmarks
• diagnostics for coins that are the most frequent targets of counterfeiters
• research from NGC's series of Counterfeit Detection articles

At the top of the NGC Counterfeit Detection portal’s list of the Top 25 Most Commonly Counterfeited World Coins is a vintage Russian coin, the 1897AT 15 Roubles. Fake 1897AT 15 Roubles are often transfer-die counterfeits, so collectors should look for depressions that will be repeated in the same places on all coins struck from the same counterfeit dies.

NGC has helped to identify more than 100,000 counterfeit coins since it was established in 1987. NGC’s coin authentication and grading services are available to European collectors and dealers through NGC International GmbH (NGC GmbH), the Munich-based affiliate of NGC.
