NGC-certified Transylvania Coin Realizes More than $155,000 in Berlin Auction
Posted on 2/11/2020
Several European coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) soared above pre-auction estimates at a Berlin sale presented by Künker Münzauktionen and Goldhandel on January 30, 2020. The top highlight was a late-17th century gold coin minted in Hungary for Transylvania that realized 140,000 € (about $155,000 USD).
The Hungary 1695KV (Transylvania) 10 Ducats graded NGC MS 62 is a relic of the Holy Roman Empire. It features Leopold I, who was Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 until his death in 1705. One of the most important events of Leopold I’s long reign came in 1683. The Imperial Army and its allies routed the forces of the Ottoman Empire, which marked the historic end of the expansion of the Ottomans into Europe, including Transylvania — a major turning point in the history of the Western world.
