Five NGC-certified Coins Realize More Than $100,000 Each at Heritage NYINC Sale

Five coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) realized more than $100,000 each January 12-13 at a New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC) sale of world coins presented by Heritage Auctions.

Testifying to NGC’s expertise in world and ancient coins, 37 of the top 50 prices realized in the sale were achieved by NGC-certified lots.

“As the results of this particular world and ancient auction demonstrate, the world and ancient coin markets have clearly embraced the value of NGC certification,” said Cristiano Bierrenbach, Executive Vice President of International Numismatics at Heritage. “NGC’s accuracy, consistency and integrity give bidders greater confidence.”

The top NGC-graded coin, a Great Britain 1839 Gold 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 61 Ultra Cameo, with the famous Una and the Lion design on the reverse, sold for $300,000 — far above its pre-sale estimate.

Another Great Britain coin, an 1817 Three Graces Pattern Silver Crown graded NGC PF 65, realized $156,000. The coin with George III on the obverse has on its reverse a depiction of the Graces of Greek mythology, in this case representing England, Ireland and Scotland.

An ancient coin, a Sicily, Syracuse BC 405-370 (Euainetos) Silver Decadrachm graded NGC Ancients Choice AU, Strike 4/5, Surface 5/5, with Fine Style, realized $132,000.

A Denmark 1704 Gold 5 Ducats graded NGC MS 62 realized $120,000. The coin has a depiction of King Frederik IV on the obverse and a ship on the reverse and is pedigreed to the Pedersen Collection.

The final NGC-graded coin to break six figures is from Spain. The Segovia 1708 Y 8 Escudos graded NGC AU 58 realized $114,000.

• An Abd Al-Malik ibn Marwan AH 77 (AD 696) Gold Umayyad Dinar graded NGC AU 53 that also realized $96,000.
• A Germany Regensburg 1790-92 Gold 10 Ducats graded NGC AU 58 that realized $93,000.
• An England 1584-86 Gold Ryal graded NGC XF 45 that realized $78,000.
• A Great Britain 1893 Gold 5 Sovereigns graded NGC PF 65 Ultra Cameo that realized $72,000.
• A Germany Munster 1661 Germany Gold 6 Ducats graded NGC MS 62 that also realized $72,000.
• A Bohemia Prague 1640 Gold 10 Ducats graded NGC AU Details that also realized $72,000.
• A German New Guinea 1895A Gold 10 Marks graded NGC PF 65 that also realized $72,000.

Prices realized are in US dollars and include a 20% buyer’s premium.
