NGC Special Designations and Labels for the 2020-W Proof Platinum American Eagle

The third and final Proof Platinum American Eagle in the US Mint’s lovely Preamble to the Declaration of Independence series goes on sale January 30, 2020. Coins received by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) within the first 30 days of release are eligible for the popular Early Releases and First Releases designations.

The Preamble series began with Life in 2018, followed by Liberty in 2019 and now Pursuit of Happiness in 2020. Each of the coins features an allegorical Liberty figure that represents one of the tenets of the Declaration of Independence.

Pursuit of Happiness is conveyed with a successful harvest. Liberty carries a cornucopia of gathered fruits and grains, and orderly fields stretch into the distance. A farmhouse is perched on the horizon. The background concludes a narrative of the series: Liberty began her journey on furrowed ground, then crossed mountains. In this closing chapter, she enjoys peace and bounty, while a child by her side reaches toward a butterfly in her own pursuit of happiness.

The word “Happiness” is inscribed on the coin in 18th century script, as it appears in the Declaration of Independence. The long “s” is a letterform typical of its time, but no longer used.

The coins, struck at the West Point mint, have a face value of $100 and contain 1 ounce of .9995 fine platinum. Mintage is limited to 13,000 coins, with an order limit of one per household.

• All coins submitted must be graded.

Bulk submissions

NGC’s First Day of Issue designation and labels are available for select bulk submissions only. To qualify for First Day of Issue, coins must be purchased within one day of the first day that a mint makes a new coin issue available for sale and must be received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository within one week of the release date. NGC will require that the submitter provide adequate evidence (including purchase receipts) to demonstrate the date when the coins were purchased.
