The NGC Registry Awards

Posted on 11/12/2019

There are many ways to win an NGC Registry Award and benefit from participation.

The NGC Registry is the hobby’s most comprehensive, online coin collecting platform. It was created in 2001 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) to help collectors organize and display their collections and earn prizes and recognition. Today, the NGC Registry boasts more than 1.1 million coins registered in more than 130,000 sets by more than 15,000 members from around the world. Participation is free and easy.

Every January, NGC awards the best sets in each category and in the NGC Registry overall. More than $20,000 in prizes will be given to winners of major NGC Registry awards this year. Hurry—the deadline to enter is 10:00am ET on December 6, 2019.

With the NGC Registry Awards approaching, we are hearing from collectors who want to know how they can improve their chances of winning a major award. Others assume that the major award categories are out of reach to them, and some simply are not aware of the benefits available to them by simply participating in the NGC Registry.

Read on for information about winning an NGC Registry Award and benefitting from participation.

The NGC Registry judging panel is looking at sets throughout the year. Therefore, you should not wait to start a new set or improve an existing set. Entering a new set or improving a set well in advance of the deadline will increase your chances of being noticed.

Anyone can win the Best Presented category. Your set type and rank hold little weight in the consideration for the Best Presented Award. Rather, the judges are specifically looking at sets that have a strong overall set description, along with images and informative comments for coins in the set.

The NGC Registry is more than simply a place to list the coins in your collection. It is a platform to share who you are as a collector and what drives your interests. Why do you collect a specific series? How long did you search for a particular piece? What is your goal for your set? The NGC Registry tools provide the opportunity to personalize your set and inspire other collectors, and the Best Presented award recognizes these efforts.

Images are available for NGC-certified coins and may be used in your NGC Registry set at no cost. In October 2008, NGC began a comprehensive coin imaging project, photographing coins after encapsulation by NGC. If you are new to the NGC Registry, you will be prompted to add NGC images where available as you enter coins.

If you have an existing set, you can upload NGC images for your entire set when you click to edit your set. This upload process will not replace any photos you have already added. Please note that an NGC image may not be available for some coins.

NGC awards more than $20,000 in prizes. Winners of major NGC Registry Awards will receive a personalized plaque, an icon of recognition next to their NGC Registry set and a $500 NGC grading credit. Because participation in the NGC Registry is free, what do you have to lose?

Winners in the major award categories will be celebrated in the collecting community. NGC announces winners on the NGC website, in a press release and in a full-page ad in The Numismatist, the official publication of the American Numismatic Association (ANA). Additionally, winning registry sets may be chosen for special display at numismatic events in the future.

All NGC Registry participants are invited to an exclusive event at the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Show in January. If you are attending the January FUN Show, this is an event you don’t want to miss. During a complimentary cocktail reception, NGC Chairman and Grading Finalizer Mark Salzberg, as well as other members of the NGC team, will discuss current topics in numismatics and answer your questions.

As an NGC Registry participant, you will receive your email invitation in early December for you and a guest. Attendees also receive a gift at the door and a chance to win other gifts to be raffled during the event.
