NGC-graded Japanese Coins Realize Impressive Sums at Auction

Coins graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) were the top sellers at an auction held April 28 by prominent Japanese firm Taisei Coins during the Tokyo International Coin Convention (TICC).

Among those realizing the highest amounts were two 19th Century Japanese gold coins. The top lot, which realized ¥24 million ($215,760 USD), was an 1877 10 Yen graded NGC PF 64★ Cameo. Realizing ¥17 million ($152,830 USD) was another Japanese gold coin from 1877, a 2 Yen rarity graded NGC PF 66 Cameo.
Other notable items sold in the auction included:
- Lot 30 — An 1876 Japan 2 Yen, graded NGC PF 63 Cameo. Realized: ¥14 million ($125,860 USD).
- Lot 470 — An 1887 Great Britain 5 Pound, graded NGC MS 66 PL. Realized: ¥2.5 million ($22,475 USD).
- Lot 633 — A 1771 Switzerland 3 Pistoles, graded NGC MS 67. Realized: ¥2.2 million ($19,778 USD).
- Lot 326 — A 1692 France Louis d'or, graded NGC MS 63. Realized: ¥2 million ($17,980 USD).
- Lot 708 — An ancient Egypt Ptolemaic Kingdom Gold Octodrachm of Arsinoe II issued after 193 BC, graded NGC Ancients MS, with a Strike of 5/5 and a Surface of 3/5. Realized: ¥1.7 million ($15,283 USD).
