NGC-certified Ancient Coin Among Top Lots in Goldberg Sale
Posted on 1/16/2019
NGC-certified coins were among the rarities at the New York International 2019 sale held by Ira & Larry Goldberg Auctioneers in January 2019. The top NGC lot was a Gold Aureus of Aelius from the second century AD, which realized $120,000 (USD).
Emperor Hadrian ruled from AD 117 until his death in 138, around the height of the Roman Empire. Near the end of his life, Hadrian named his successor: Lucius Ceionius Commodus, who took the name Aelius Caesar. The obverse of this coins shows him in this role. Aelius never achieved the title of emperor, dying several months before Hardian.
