Panda Commemoratives Return to San Francisco in 2018
Posted on 8/30/2018
A San Francisco Panda Commemorative was first issued in 1987. Now, for the first time in more than 30 years, San Francisco Pandas are once again being issued to celebrate San Francisco's long association with China's people and culture.
The 1987 Panda included only the 1-ounce version with an actual mintage reported of 3,000 pieces. It was completely sold out at the show, with commemoratives being sold dealer-to-dealer at a profit. In 1988, a 1-ounce gold was issued with a Dragon design. No Pandas were minted.
Now, three decades later, San Francisco is getting new Panda commemoratives.
Designers at the Shanghai Mint completed the designs in late 2017 and a formal announcement was made at the April 2018 CoinExpo Santa Clara, where pre-orders were opened.
The Shanghai Mint completed dies and struck the Pandas in May-June 2018. The entire mintage of the 2018 issues are only 937 pieces. They will be distributed at CoinExpo Santa Clara on September 21, 2018.
The Pandas come with two designs:
