Stack’s Bowers August Auctions Feature Rarities Graded by NGC and PMG

Very rare privately minted gold coins tied to the Georgia and California Gold Rushes are being offered as part of Stack's Bowers Rarities Night on August 15 in Philadelphia. Both coins are certified by NGC.
An 1849 Pacific Company Gold $1, graded NGC MS 61, is the finest of only three known examples. Its obverse has a design reminscent of the Mexican Cap and Rays coinage used at the time; indeed, California had only been ceded by Mexico to the United States the previous year. The reverse features an eagle (an element prominent on both Mexcian and US coinage at the time) and the legend PACIFIC COMPANY CALIFORNIA 1849.

This same specimen realized $305,500 (USD) in a sale by a different auction house in April 2014.
The Stack's Bowers Rarities Night auction also features an 1830 Templeton-Reid Gold $2.50, graded NGC MS 61, one of only three specimens certified as Mint State. The obverse features the legend GEORGIA GOLD surrounding the date, 1830, while the reverse says T. REID ASSAYER, around 2.50. Though their design is simple, such coins are historically significant for being the first private gold coins of the 19th century.

Meanwhile, a husband-and-wife pair of gold coins from the Roman Empire, both certified by NGC Ancients, are each expected to realize six figures. And the sale of the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Paper Money continues with another 768 lots, most of which were certified by PMG.
