The Continental Dollars bear the date 1776, the year in which the Continental Congress declared independence for the 13 Colonies. The names of the colonies appear on a series of rings on the reverse, surrounding "AMERICAN CONGRESS" and "WE ARE ONE" at the center.
This particular specimen is a Newman 3-D variety, and its obverse includes the letters "EG FECIT" (meaning "E.G. made it") below the sundial. In a 2012 Heritage Auctions sale, it realized $546,250.
Other highlights from the upcoming auction include:
- the finest-certified 1804 B-1 Bust Quarter, graded NGC MS 65 and pedigreed to "Colonel" Green;
- an 1870 $20 Type Two proof, graded NGC PF 65 Ultra Cameo, one of only 35 struck;
- a 1909 Indian Head $5, graded NGC PF 68, with none certified finer;
- a 1798 Large Eagle $5, graded NGC MS 64, possibly the finest known of any 1798 Eagle variety; and
- an 1805/4 Draped Bust Half Dollar, graded NGC MS 65 and pedigreed to the Eric P. Newman Collection
