NGC-graded Panama-Pacific Set Exceeds Estimate at Sotheby's Sale

A complete 1915 Panama-Pacific commemorative set graded by NGC was among the highlights of a Sotheby’s numismatic sale on May 21. The $275,000 price realized exceeded its pre-auction estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.
The set includes a Panama-Pacific silver half dollar, gold dollar and gold quarter eagle, all graded NGC MS 65, as well as the round and octagonal $50 gold pieces, each graded NGC MS 64. The original box that held the coins was also part of the lot.
Other NGC-graded highlights from this sale included:
- Lot 22: 1868 Three Cent Silver, graded NGC MS 65. Realized: $35,000, well above its pre-auction estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.
- Lot 25: 1870 Three Cent Silver, graded NGC MS 66. Realized: $32,500, more than four times its pre-auction estimate of $6,000 to $8,000.
- Lot 44: 1879-CC Silver Dollar, graded NGC MS 65. Realized: $56,250, more than triple its pre-auction estimate of $12,000 to $18,000.
- Lot 62: 1882-O Silver Dollar (O over S), graded NGC MS 65. Realized: $50,000, double its pre-auction estimate of $15,000 to $25,000.
- Lot 100: 1892 Silver Dollar, graded NGC MS 65. Realized: $10,000, four times its pre-auction estimate of $1,500 to $2,500.
- Lot 108: 1894 Silver Dollar, graded NGC MS 65. Realized: $40,000, above its pre-auction estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.
- Lot 111: 1895 Silver Dollar, graded NGC PF 66. Realized: $150,000, above its pre-auction estimate of $70,000 to $100,000.
- Lot 163: 1915 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, graded NGC MS 65. Realized: $35,000, more than double its pre-auction estimate of $8,000 to $12,000.
