NGC Extends Star to All Series
Posted on 6/18/2002
Effective immediately, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation has expanded its application of the star designation to all series of United States coins. This coveted designation is unique to NGC and identifies coins that are superior in appearance to more typical coins of the same grade. These are coins possessing exceptional eye appeal.
Previously, the star designation had been limited to particular series. The success and marketwide acceptance of this coveted feature has prompted NGC to apply it to eligible coins in all United States regular coin series. This includes patterns, but not mint errors.
There are a few exceptions in which NGC will not provide a star designation: It will not be applied to coins grading less than MS 63 or PF 63; as the ultimate grade, any coin graded MS 70 or PF 70 will not be eligible for the star; nor will coins graded MS 69 or PF 69 dated 1979 and later receive a star. NGC believes that such a designation is not applicable to these coins which typically are made with a high quality of manufacture. NGC’s star designation will be applied to qualifying coins by NGC in its normal course of grading uncertified United States coins. No additional fee is required to receive the star. Coins already certified by NGC may be resubmitted for the star designation under the company’s Designation Review service, the fee for which is $10.
NGC may be contacted by writing to P.O. Box 4776, Sarasota, FL 34230 or by calling toll-free at 800-NGC-COIN (642-2646). NGC’s email address is Service@NGCcoin.com.
