Modern Chinese Varieties: 1987 Silver 5Y Proof

Posted on 4/10/2018

This is the 39th installment of our monthly column devoted to modern Chinese varieties.

This month we feature another Silver 5Y Proof variety. In 1987, China issued the fourth in the series of Historical Figures. Included in this five-coin series (one being gold) is a silver coin honoring Li Chun. This coin can be found with a mirrored or frosted gap between Li Chun’s arm and waist.

The first variety (pictured below) is an example featuring a “mirrored gap” (Photo 1). The red arrow points to where the mirroring exists.

The second variety (pictured below) is an example featuring a “frosted gap” (Photo 2). The red arrow points to where the frosting is located.

Both of these varieties share the same common obverse featuring the date 1987 (Photo 3).

Look for another interesting variety to be featured next month.
