Modern Chinese Varieties: 1985 Silver 5Y Proof

This month we will feature a Silver 5Y Proof variety. In 1985 China issued the second series of Historical People. Included in this five-coin series (one being gold) is a silver coin honoring Chen Sheng and Wu Guang. This coin can be found with Chen Sheng having either a “short cape” or “long cape” on the reverse of the coin.

The first variety (pictured below) is an example featuring a “short cape” (Photo 1). The red arrow points to where the short part of the cape is.

The second variety (pictured below) is an example featuring a “long cape” (Photo 2). The red arrow points to where the long part of the cape is.

Both of these varieties share the same common obverse featuring the date 1985 (Photo 3).
