NGC Details-graded Coins to Receive Standard Labels; Guarantee Expanded
Posted on 12/26/2017
NGC will encapsulate NGC Details-graded coins with its standard labels if received on or after Jan. 2, 2018. In addition, the NGC Guarantee, which previously covered only the authenticity of NGC Details-graded coins, will be expanded to cover both the authenticity and grade of NGC Details-graded coins.
NGC assigns adjectival NGC Details grades (such as XF Details or AU Details) to coins that have certain surface conditions (such as cleaning or damage) that preclude a precise numeric grade on the Sheldon scale of 1 to 70. The NGC Details grade is printed on the NGC certification label along with a description of the surface issue.
Previously, coins that received an NGC Details grade were encapsulated with a purple NGC Details label. These coins will now be encapsulated with the NGC standard brown label by default or with any eligible NGC special label by request.
Note: Coins received by NGC prior to January 2, 2018, that receive an NGC Details grade will be encapsulated with the purple NGC Details label.

The NGC Guarantee will now cover both the authenticity and grade of NGC Details-graded coins, including ones previously encapsulated with the purple NGC Details label. These changes reflect the growing importance and marketplace acceptance of NGC Details-graded coins. As the range of coins certified by NGC has expanded to include earlier issues, NGC Details grades have become more common. In fact, in many cases, NGC Details-graded coins may be the only examples available. They also often present a more affordable option for collectors to acquire a key date.
In conjunction with these changes, NGC will replace the “Improperly Cleaned” and “Surface Hairlines” notations with the simpler notation “Cleaned.”
Coins currently encapsulated with a purple NGC Details label may be re-encapsulated with the standard NGC brown label under NGC’s ReHolder service. All ReHolders of NGC Details-graded coins will automatically receive the standard NGC brown label if received on or after Jan. 2, 2018. For a list of NGC Services and Fees, visit NGCcoin.com/Services
