NGC-certified Russian Coins Exceed Expectations at Swiss Auction

Rare Russian coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) excelled at a recent sale held by Swiss International Coin Auction AG (SINCONA), which holds auctions twice a year in Zurich.
SINCONA Auction 42 (Russian Coins and Medals), held on Oct. 23, 2017, drew a healthy crowd of Russian dealers and collectors. Coins in the auction realized more than 3 million CHF. (The Swiss franc and US dollar were essentially trading at parity at the time of the auction.)

The star of SINCONA Auction 42 was Lot 1074, a 1762CNB Russia Rouble, graded NGC MS 62. It realized 650,000 CHF, or 13 times its pre-auction estimate of 50,000 CHF. The coin, a Peter III Bit-40 pattern, hails from the six months that Emperor Peter III ruled Russia in 1762. Like the other top items from the auction, this coin is pedigreed to the impressive collection of Leonid Soedermann.

- Lot 1264: 1860CNB OB Russia 25K, graded NGC MS 61, Realized 210,000 CHF, (Pre-auction estimate: 200,000 CHF)
- Lot 1044: 1729 Russia Ducat, graded NGC AU 53, Realized 100,000 CHF, (Pre-auction estimate: 20,000 CHF)
- Lot 1023: 1716 Russia Ducat, graded NGC XF 40, Realized 95,000 CHF, (Pre-auction estimate: 20,000 CHF)
"We had many coins in NGC holders in this auction," said Arne Kirsch, an accredited expert numismatist at SINCONA and president of the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN). Citing the challenge that counterfeiters pose to Russian numismatics, Kirsch added: "Bidders understand the benefits of NGC certification and appreciate the NGC Guarantee of Authenticity."
Additionally, as a member of IAPN, SINCONA offers its own guarantee of authenticity.
