Modern Chinese Varieties: 1990 Silver 50Y 5 oz Horse

This is the 34th installment of our monthly column devoted to modern Chinese varieties.

This month we will feature the 1990 Silver 50Y 5 oz Horse variety. This coin can be found with two reverse varieties.

The first variety (pictured below) is an example featuring “long grass" and a centered "50Y" (Photo 1). The red arrows point to where the alignment of 50Y falls in relation to the waves (Photo 2).

The second variety (pictured below) is an example featuring “short grass" and an uncentered "50Y" (Photo 3). The red arrows point to where the alignment of 50Y falls in relation to the waves (Photo 4).

Both of these varieties share the same common obverse featuring the Temple of Confucius and the date 1990 (Photo 5).
