PMG and NGC highlights from Spink’s Hong Kong Auction

PMG-graded notes had the top two prices realized for notes in Spink's Hong Kong, China Numismatic Collector's Series Sale, held August 15-17 in conjunction with the Hong Kong, China Coin Show. Meanwhile, the top result for a coin was achieved by an NGC-certified Chinese modern coin.

Here are some of the PMG and NGC-certified highlights from the auction:

• Lot 1429 - Hong Kong, China, The Chartered Bank, $500, January 1, 1977, number 1 serial number, (Pick 72d), graded PMG 64 EPQ. Price realized: HK$320,000 (roughly $41,000 USD), doubling its pre-auction estimate of HK$120,000-$200,000.
• Lot 1592 - Hong Kong, China, The HongKong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, $500, July 1, 1930, (Pick 177b), graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated. Price realized: HK$300,000 (roughly $38,000 USD), beating its pre-auction estimate of HK$150,000-$180,000.
• Lot 185 – China, Bank of China, set of 5 specimens, $1, $5, $10, $50 and $100, 1914, (Pick 33s to 35Bs), graded PMG 67 EPQ; 64; 58 EPQ; 58 EPQ; and 66EPQ, respectively. Price realized: HK$240,000 (roughly $31,000 USD), beating its pre-auction estimate of HK$180,000-$200,000.
• Lot 1618 - Hong Kong, China, The HongKong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, $1000, 1988, lucky number set of 11, (Pick 199a), graded PMG 64 EPQ to 67 EPQ. Price realized: HK$220,000 (roughly $28,000 USD), beating its pre-auction estimate of HK$180,000-$200,000.
• Lot 878 - China, People's Bank of China, 2nd series renminbi, 1953, 10 yuan, (Pick 870), graded PMG 59 Choice About Uncirculated. Price realized: HK$200,000 (roughly $26,000 USD), beating its pre-auction estimate of HK$145,000-$160,000.

NGC highlights

• Lot 2205 - China, gold 1000 yuan, 1996, Year of Rat, graded NGC PF 66 Ultra Cameo. Price realized: HK$320,000 (roughly $41,000 USD).
• Lot 2203 - People's Republic of China, 1993 gold 100 yuan, graded NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo. Price realized: HK$105,000 (roughly $13,000 USD)
• Lot 2220 (two coins) - People's Republic of China, 1981 silver 35 yuan, graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo, and 1981 gold 400 yuan, graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo, issued to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution. Price realized: HK$75,000 (roughly $10,000 USD).
