NGC Star to Include Commemoratives
Posted on 4/8/2002
Effective immediately, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation has expanded its application of the star () designation to United States commemorative coins displaying exceptional eye appeal. This coveted designation is unique to NGC and identifies coins that are superior in appearance to more typical coins of the same grade.
Only the silver commemoratives of the 1892-1954 era will be eligible to receive the NGC star at this time. These are among the most widely collected of USA issues, and they are often notable for their outstanding aesthetic value. Features that may earn the star designation for these coins include superb luster and/or beautiful toning. Previously applied only to modern or current series, the popular acceptance of NGC’s star designation since its introduction a year and a half ago has led to its recent extension to more traditional collector coins such as Morgan and Peace Dollars.
NGC’s star designation will be applied to qualifying coins by NGC in its normal course of grading uncertified commemoratives. No additional fee is required to receive the star. Coins already certified by NGC may be resubmitted for the star designation under the company’s Designation Review service, the fee for which is $10.
