NGC Highlights from the Upcoming Champion Macau, China Auction
Posted on 11/29/2016
The Champion Macau Auction will be held on December 3, 2016 at the Sofitel Ponte 16 Hotel in Macau, China. This Macau, China auction features a number of NGC-certified coins from the NC Collection and the Charles Tanant collection of Chinese coins.
The NC Collection is the most complete Chinese silver and copper coin collection ever handled by Champion. Many of the coins were obtained from the 1970s to 1990s through major auctions and private treaty sale from some of the top dealers, including H. Chang of Hong Kong, China and Hans Schulman of New York. Some of the coins can be traced back to an even earlier source: a collection built in the 1930s and purchased directly from Hans Schulman. Schulman handled the Woodward and Kann collection through private treaty before the First Kann Auction in 1971.
One of the top items from the collection was the first Chinese Coin to exceed USD 10,000 at auction: the Heaton Archive Hunan Dollar, NGC SP 67, which sold for USD 15,500 through Paramount auction in 1975. Another great rarity is the 1884 Kirin Pattern set of Spelter Uniface Strikings, formerly of Woodward and Kann collection, purchased in 1976 for USD 10,000 from H. Chang. Many other great Chinese rarities were added to the collection, including many of the finest known examples graded by NGC.
“It is a great pleasure for NGC to examine the great beauty of the Chinese rarities in the NC Collection,” said NGC Chairman Mark Salzberg.
