Glenna Goodacre Hand Signs NGC Labels

Glenna Goodacre, world renowned sculptor and designer of the obverse of the Sacagawea dollar, has individually hand signed a limited number of certification labels for Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®).

Goodacre’s design for the Sacagawea dollar was selected in 1999 in a national competition. The composition depicts Sacagawea carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste on her back. Sacagawea is a Lemhi Shoshone American Indian famous for helping Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their exploration of the American West.

The selection of Goodacre’s design made her one of a small number of independent artists to have their artwork minted on a US circulation coin.

Outside of numismatics, Goodacre is well known and highly respected for her large-scale bronze sculptures. Her work is exhibited and displayed in private and public collections throughout the US and internationally. Among her best known works is the Vietnam Women’s Memorial located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

Goodacre signed a limited number of NGC labels that will be paired with 2000-dated “Goodacre Presentation” Sacagawea Dollars. Only 5,000 of these special finish Specimen coins were minted in order to pay Goodacre’s $5,000 prize for her winning Sacagawea design.

Goodacre joins Elizabeth Jones, the 11th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint and Edmund C. Moy, the 38th Director of the US Mint, who have all hand-signed certified labels for NGC.
