Modern Chinese Varieties: 1990 Silver 50Y 5 oz Olympic Speed Skaters

Posted on 12/13/2016

This is the 23rd installment of our monthly column devoted to modern Chinese varieties.

The Olympics is a popular series among many countries over many years. Our featured variety can be found on the 1990 Silver 50Y 5 oz coin featuring three speed skaters. This Proof coin can be found with both small and large stars on the obverse side.

This is an example of the “small stars” variety located on the obverse (Photos 1 & 2).

Both of these coins share a common reverse featuring three speed skaters and the date 1992, which signified the year of the 16th Winter Olympics (Photo 5).
