NGC Great Britain 1839 Proof Set Headlines Baldwin’s September Auction 96

A Great Britain 1839 Proof Set, entirely certified by NGC, headlined the recently concluded Baldwin’s Auction 96, held September 25, 2015. Among the 15 gold, silver and copper coins included in the proof set (lot #3573) was an NGC PF 66 Ultra Cameo example of the famous and highly desirable Una and the Lion Gold Five Pounds.
The NGC-certified set realized an extraordinary £504,000 (US $764,567) more than quadruple the presale estimate of £90,000 to £120,000. The previous world record price for a Great Britain 1839 Proof Set was £225,050.

The Baldwin’s sale featured several other NGC highlights that eclipsed their presale estimates. A Great Britain 1896B Gold Trade Dollar graded NGC PF 64 (lot #3588) deserves special mention for its record-shattering price of £220,000 (US $333,939). This coin had a presale estimate of just £40,000 to £50,000. The previous world record price for a Gold British Trade Dollar was £154,700.
Also notable was the Great Britain 1893 Proof Set graded NGC 65 Ultra Cameo to NGC PF 67 Ultra Cameo (lot #3575) that sold for £69,600 (US $105,583). It had a presale estimate of £16,000 to £18,000.
A Great Britain 1935B Silver Trade Dollar graded NGC MS 62 (lot #3605) had a presale estimate of £3,000 to £4,000 but realized an impressive £19,200 (US $29,126).
