Modern Chinese Varieties: 1988 Platinum 1oz 100 Yuan Panda

Posted on 9/22/2015

This is the eighth installment of our monthly column featuring Chinese varieties that are now recognized by NGC.

This month’s featured coin is the 1988 Platinum 1oz 100Y Panda. Like the Gold 1oz 100Y Dragon coins of this date, these coins were produced with a small and large date. Additionally, the central figure, the Temple of Heaven, is also different on each coin.

On the obverse of the small date coin, the temple entrance, located just above the stairs, appears with door open (three openings) (Photos 1 & 2).

On the obverse of the large date coin, the temple entrance, located just above the stairs, appears with door closed (four openings) (Photos 3 & 4).

Each of these Varieties share a common reverse depicting a Panda (Photo 5).

Look for another interesting variety to be featured next month.
