Meet NGC Senior Consultant YQ Zhang

Yuequn Zhang, better known as “YQ,” has been a Senior Consultant to Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC) ® since 2011. A well-known and highly respected numismatist, YQ has served an important advisory role to NGC as it has expanded its presence in China.

Prior to becoming a Senior Consultant to NGC, YQ worked for than 40 years for China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation (CBPMC), the subsidiary of the People’s Bank of China responsible for printing banknotes and minting coins. He ultimately became Senior Economist at the Shanghai Mint, the position from which he retired in 2011.

While at CBPMC, YQ developed a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the minting process employed by China for both vintage and modern coins. This included detailed knowledge of the materials used, the production processes and the different technologies employed by the China Mint over time. As a result of this mastery, YQ is able to expertly authenticate and evaluate all modern Chinese coins.

YQ was also involved with the established of the China Mint Museum and the Shanghai Mint Museum. He is a member of the Shanghai Numismatic Society and the Shanghai Museum of Cultural Relics Society.
