Modern Chinese Varieties: 1995 Return of Taiwan Large & Small Date

This is the second of our monthly articles that feature Chinese modern coin varieties. This month’s featured coin is the Proof 1995 (5 oz) Return of Taiwan, Province of China Silver 50 Yuan, island design. The two varieties of this coin have different sizes for the “5 oz” found on the reverse of the coin.

The first variety exhibits a small version of “5 oz” on the reverse. NGC will now denote this as SMALL 5 oz on the NGC certification label. (Photos 1 & 2)

The second variety exhibits a larger version of the “5 oz” on the reverse. NGC will now denote this as LARGE 5 oz on the NGC certification label. (Photos 3 & 4)
