Residues can diminish the aesthetic beauty of many coins. When unsightly residues build up in the fine recesses of a design, the substances can also form other changes in the surface metal of a coin including discoloration or undesirable toning and sometimes environmental damage.
This 1861 Australia ½ Sovereign from the Sydney mint was recently submitted to NCS for professional conservation of residues and discoloration on the surface. The conservators at NCS were able to carefully remove the thick residues in the crevices of the design as well as addressing the areas of minor discoloration. The resulting coin is free of residue and with an even tone of a classic gold coin. This coin was able to grade numerically with NGC following professional conservation work at NCS.
