Many historical coins also show a history of their own in the form of residues. This large silver Mexico 1809Mo 8 Real arrived at NCS covered in thick copious amounts of a brown residue. These kinds of residues are often indicative of burial in soil. Also quite often coins sporting this kind of residue will have corrosion of surface metal under that residue.
Meticulous removal of the brown residues on this coin resulted in an 8 Reals coin relatively free from damage caused by the elements. This lucky coin was able to grade numerically with NGC following the conservation work.
