A common sign of PVC residue development on silver and nickel coins is a green residue. Copper coins can develop a similar green residue with more advanced cases of PVC but earlier cases frequently will show spots of an unnatural shininess. This 1914 D Lincoln Cent displayed the spotty, unnaturally shiny, almost oily spots of a copper coin with early PVC residue development.

This particular Cent presented conservators with some extra challenges. Circulated coins as well as copper coins both present separate challenges with their unique surfaces. Conservators at NCS were able to remove the PVC residue as well as small areas of other residues leaving this natural looking key date coin ready for numerical grading with NGC.
