[IRVINE, Calif.] – Join Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio as they conduct the Official Auction of the August 2012 World’s Fair of Money! The world and ancients division of Stack’s Bowers Galleries will present over 1,300 lots of ancient and world coins and paper money on Wednesday, August 8 and Friday, August 10. Please note that we will also be offering an Internet-only session containing over 700 lots of ancient and world coins and paper money that will close on Tuesday, August 14. The sale will feature coins from the Demarete Collection, the Madeleine Collection, and much more.
World gold coins, crowns, and minors will be offered in Session B which will take place on Friday, August 10 beginning at 10:00 AM. Italian gold features an 1821-L one year type Sardinia 80 Lire graded AU-58 by NGC; this coin hails from the Demarete Collection is a survivor from a mintage of just 965 pieces. Among Polish issues is a well struck 1585 Stephen Bathory gold Ducat of Danzig graded AU-58 by NGC. Russian coins feature a number of very rare pieces in both gold and platinum, like the low mintage 1755 gold 5 Ruble in NGC AU-55, the very rare platinum 12 Ruble of 1831 in the same grade, and the Mint State 1830 platinum 6 Ruble that is tied for the second finest certified in the grade of NGC MS-64.
The section of world crowns and minors provides a pleasing selection of coins that offers something for every collector. Brazilian coins feature a nice run of countermarked cobs, Minas Gerais countermarks, and pattern issues, and French coinage showcases an excellent selection of high grade 5 Franc pieces, many from the Madeleine Collection. British rarities are once again at the fore, with an extremely rare 1644 Oxford mint Pound offered as lot 40575. A well struck example of the issue, this coin is graded EF-45 by NGC and presents a great opportunity to own a distinctly rare coin from a tumultuous period in Britain’s history.
