Conservation Showcase: Germany 1868 10 Pfennig Bavaria

A combination of residues can make an excellent coin appear to be far less than what it should be. This 1686 10 Pfennig made by the German State of Bavaria was recently submitted to NCS for professional conservation. The bright green residue on the high points of the legends and the shield on this coin are a sure indication that long-term storage in a PVC laden flip had left a thick PVC residue on the surface of this small silver coin. The PVC combined with other dark brown residues to make this particular coin much less than the grand piece it is.

Careful conservation work was able to remove both the offending green PVC residues and the brown residues from the surface of this classic German States coin. Great care was taken to leave the surface of this coin looking natural. Extra caution was also exacted given this coin’s thin planchet and small diameter.
