The enthusiast of American numismatics may not be familiar with the term “piefort” but these coins do comprise a significant portion of world numismatics. Pieforts are specially produced coins similar to proofs but are made with planchets of greater thickness. The results are coins with greater detail and in general very proof like surfaces in addition to the greater weight.
This piefort 1892 1 Centavo coin issued by Costa Rica was submitted for conservation to improve both its appearance prior to grading and help keep it stable in long term storage. Residues were removed revealing mirrored fields and greater design detail while leaving much of the toning. This coin was able to grade with NGC well after the conservation work.
