The Russian Navy’s battle of Gangut in the summer of 1714 is important in Russian history as the first naval victory for the emerging European power. The battle has provided the name of a ship in the Russian Navy ever since and provided the subject of a commemorative coin in 1996 in a series honoring famous Russian battles.
No project is too large for the conservators at NCS. It may be difficult to determine from the image, but this 1996 Russian 25 Rouble is a very large coin containing 5 ounces of silver. The coin was submitted to NCS to have some minor hazing and residue spotting issues cleared up prior to certification with NGC. Minor hazing and spots as can be seen particularly to the left of the bust above the battle scene on this piece. Such hazing can prevent a modern coin from grading as high as it could. After conservation, this coin was able to grade very well numerically with NGC.
