Conservation Showcase: 1927 $20 Double Eagle

Gold coins are prone to developing small reddish spots commonly referred to as “copper spots.” While these spots are commonly encountered, they will rarely impact the grade of a coin. What these spots do impact, however, is their aesthetic appeal and removing them will lead to a more attractive coin in a collection and in the marketplace.

This 1927 St. Gaudens $20 was submitted to have several typical copper spots removed. As you can see, the largest formed over Liberty’s left shoulder. The conservators at NCS were careful to remove the distracting spot while retaining the look of the remainder of the surfaces. Following conservation, this coin was able to grade numerically with NGC.
