Any numismatist active in the modern coin series knows the importance of a coin grading a 69 or 70. This 1989 S Proof Congress Bicentennial Commemorative Dollar was recently submitted by a smart collector seeking to have this coin grade at the best of its ability. The hazing and odd toning around the periphery could very well prevent this coin from attaining the highest grade. Conservators with NCS have developed methods to content with such residue and can usually remove it successfully without causing damage to the surfaces underneath.
This coin was submitted to NCS using the modern special rate. To help modern coins dated 1970-present grade their best, a special modern rate of $22.50 includes both conservation to remove any residues and grading with NGC. This particular modern commemorative was able to grade very well with NGC following the conservation.
