Even what may seem at first to be a minor issue can make a big difference when a modern coin is to be graded. This 1988-S Proof Olympic Commemorative Dollar was recently submitted by an astute numismatist who realized that the hazing around the periphery, commonly caused by long-term storage in original mint packaging, will prevent this coin from grading to its fullest potential. Conservators with NCS have developed methods to contend with such residue and can usually remove it successfully without causing damage to the surfaces underneath.
To help modern coins dated 1970-present grade their best, a special modern rate is offered. For $22.50 any modern coin, maximum value $3,000 per coin, will be both conserved, to remove any residues, and graded. This particular modern commemorative was able to grade very well with NGC following the conservation.
