Modern world coins are just as susceptible to the problems of improper storage and inferior coin holders as are modern coins produced by the U.S. Mint. Original mint packaging is often not air tight and frequently will contain chemicals that over time can develop distracting residues on the surface of the coins they are intended to display.

This 1980 dated East German 20 Mark commemorative coin honoring Ernst Abbe, a German physicist whose work with optics is still used today, was submitted to NCS prior to grading with NGC. The residues that had developed on the surface of this Commemorative were able to be removed to reveal a bright coin underneath. Using the Modern Special service with NCS with one low fee for both conservation and grading, this coin was able to grade highly with NGC following removal of the residues.
